What is a Good Pen for Journaling?
It depends on what kind of journal person you are. If you're just starting out, you'll want to try out a bunch of different kinds of pens before committing to a larger set.
I like seeing what other journal people like to use for their planning, so I thought it would be nice to share what I like. So, I hope you like!
Some different types of pens:
Brush Pens - for that gorgeous calligraphy
Markers - adding decorative elements
Fineliners - pens with fine tips for more detailed work and writing
Gel pens - really inky pens
Archival ink pens - chemically stable, waterproof and fade-resistant
Dual-ended pens - different types of pens in one
Where to Buy Cheap Pens for Journaling and Planning
Like I said, I have this pen obsession, and I'm always looking for pens, even though I have way too many in my collection.
There's something about finding the perfect pen - the way it fits in your hand, how it glides on paper, and the quality of the ink that clearly shows off your art. Ah yes.

Awesome Cheap Pens for Journaling
Keep in mind that pens usually come in singles and sets. Test out singles before committing to sets, and you'll save a ton of money.
Michael's Craft Store: Artist's Loft brand pens
SHOPPING TIP: Download/screenshot the latest coupons for the day on Michael's website. They usually have 40% a regular priced item coupon almost every day.
Artist's Loft has so many pens and markers to choose from at pretty cheap prices. I like to buy the smaller sets, because seriously, I have too many. Still, I look for deals on these pens (there's sweet deals right now), and save money whenever I crave a new pen set.
Target has some really great deals on pens. Timing is everything when going to your local stores. Shopping online is also a great idea to help get that cash back action with Ebates!
Amazon is the place to find great deals and free shipping, if you have Prime. If you don't have Prime, sometimes, it's cheaper to just go to your local stores for deals.
Please note that Amazon is a place where brands just slap their name on mass-produced products. That's why you'll find many similar items with different "brand names".
That doesn't mean they're crap. It just means it's mass-produced, and also, that's probably why they're cheap. But hey, I'm not complaining. I want all the pens.
Bullet Journal Planner Pens, set of 18 $6.49 - I swear, that's what they're labeled.
Paper Mate InkJoy Gel Pens, Fine Point, Assorted Colors, 8 Count $11.63
If you like fine gel pens, these InkJoy pens are great. I use them for work and are pretty great quality. I bought mine at Staples (pretty expensive), so Amazon is usually the better place to get them, especially on special.
Dual Tip Brush Marker Pens, set of 36 $12.99
Dual Tip Art Marker Pens, set of 24 $7.99
Sakura Pigma Micron Pens are my absolute favorite pens. I have tried almost all of their pens, and they really do have a style for all your needs. If you need super fine, almost hair-thin lines, they have pens for that. If you need thicker brushes, they have those too.
Sakura Pigma Micron, set of 6, Assorted sizes $10.97
So there you have some awesome cheap pens for journaling if you're just starting out, or even if you like these kinds of pens.
Pen love is an art. We all have different preferences, and I wanted to share mine with you, in case we're pen twinsies. Happy shopping! Don't forget to use Ebates and coupons to save some bucks!
