11 Budget Friendly Home Decor Upgrades

Home decor upgrades can get expensive really quick, especially if you have an obsessive Pinterest habit (ahem...guilty). I want all the pretty things!

Today, I'm sharing a bunch of ways you can upgrade your home decor and still stick to a pretty decent budget. If anything, upgrade one thing at a time. Even small changes can make a huge difference and inspire you to continue improving your home.

Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody, Everywhere

First, the absolute most affordable home upgrade you can achieve immediately is to declutter your home. There would really be no point in putting in effort to make your home look nicer if it's messy. Ya know what I mean?

When you clean up and declutter, you might also be able to recycle, donate and make some money out of your stuff. Double score!

Take Some Paint to It

You won't believe how different your home will look with just a touch of paint. Here are some ideas that you can take on immediately. Note: 1 gallon of paint will cover up to 400 square feet.

  1. Accent wall. Paint one wall a different color. Darker tones deepen the mood (perfect for bedrooms and relaxing areas). Bright tones add energy and positivity (kids rooms, entertaining rooms, etc.). Most apartment complexes are okay with paint as long as you clear it with them first and paint it back to the old color when you leave.
  2. Furniture. You can easily change the look of a piece of furniture by painting it a different color or re-staining wood furniture. Lighter colors of wood can look dated, so go for a darker stain if you like that sort of thing. Add metallic accents for that instant glam look!
  3. Knobs and Faucets. There is special paint for metal items like knobs and faucets. Taking some paint to these items can easily change the look of your home.

Change Cabinet Knobs and Handles

Most of my cabinets have knobs that aren't all that cute, and I imagine most people don't even consider changing these out. If after a while, you're sick and tired of looking at the same metal/wooden/whatever handles and knobs in your home, change 'em out for these beauties! Crystal knobs can add an instant touch of wow! to your cabinets.

These are 12 for $15 on with free shipping!

Use Your Green Thumb of Fake It

My thumbs are black. I just always forget to water plants and flowers (poor plants). However, they look really nice on the dining table, counter or desktop.

If you can keep up with the plant life, add some succulents and air plants into your home. They're good for the air (cleaning and purifying), look really nice and require minimal maintenance. I saw a bunch of cute succulents at Home Depot, so pop in to your local store to see what they've got.

For those with black thumbs like mine, fake plants are your friend. I like Ikea's Fejka plants (there are a bunch of them named Fejka), because they look kinda real from far away (hehe), and they look really nice on my bookshelf and desk.

Window Treatments

If you're a renter, you probably have some version of white blinds pre-installed. I highly recommend that you remove them and hand them back to the property manager (or store them away until you move out).

Curtains offer much more protection (blackouts are the best), and they look much nicer and more homey too. Match them to your accent wall and rug for a cohesive look.

I like to buy blackout curtains like these from Walmart. They're cheap, block out light and look pretty chic.

Luxe (Looking) Glass Storage

Whatever it is that you want to store, when you put it in clear glass, it looks much more expensive. My boyfriend stores his Gundam models in two of these glass cases from Ikea. They're cheap and super quick to put together. Grab a friend, because they are heavy.

They make toys look like they're worth more than they are, and if I had one, my makeup and jewelry would go in there - maybe pretty shoes too, because why not?

Bookcase and Shelves

It's really easy to go overboard when putting things into a bookcase, so be careful not to overload it with stuff. The purpose of a bookcase like this is to make your necessary clutter look like decoration.

Books look really nice on the shelf next to some fake Ikea plants like I talked about above. Photos also look nice next to little trinkets that you might collect as a hobby. Whatever it is you put on the shelf, think about how you want to position the items to make them look the most attractive and appealing.

Don't Forget About the Floor

Rugs can take your floor to a whole new level. See what I did there? Ok, I'm lame, but seriously, rugs can be really functional and add just that much more to bring your home together.

They block sound (some of it). If you live in an apartment above someone else, it'll be nice to kind of try to cushion the sound of your footsteps with rugs.

I like this rug and have two of these, but there are so many to choose from. Depending on your home design aesthetic, you'll want to match your accents, window treatments and rugs. Match doesn't mean the same exact color - just as long as you think they look nice together, go for it.

Accent Lighting

For that warm and cozy feeling, warm white lights are perfect to set the mood. If you feel like the lights in your home generate too much heat, consider switching to LED bulbs. They don't get as hot, and they use up less power.

Upgrade your backyard, patio or even living room with string lights like these. I see them all the time in other people's patios and they look so cozy and inviting. String lights can be pricey, because they're "trendy", so wait for a big sale and grab 'em.

Clear Storage - Glass and Plastic

Like I said earlier, put something in a nice clear container, and it already looks expensive, even if it's just cereal or cotton swabs.

Upgrading your kitchen and bathroom is a breeze, when you can find deals like this on glass containers at the Dollar Tree, it's super easy to switch up your current storage and put your food and bathroom essentials on display.

Wall Art and Canvas Prints

Last year, I discovered that I could get high quality canvas prints of my photos for super cheap. I was excited, so I placed an order. When the canvases came in, I fell in love with them. I had always wanted them but was put off by the ridiculous price some print places charge.

If you like displaying photos or art on your walls, I recommend canvases, because they look so nice. They aren't fragile and last forever. I get my canvas prints from here. TIP: Join the mailing list for emails when they have their discount deals. Canvas prints at 85% off, heck yes!

This is a sample canvas design screen. That's me up there! Check out those price cuts though.
